Brahmapur-The Silk City-Odisha


The Brahmapur (Home of Lord Brahma) city is a municipal corporation located on the eastern coastline of Ganjam district of Odisha, one of the states of India. Berhampur is morely known as “The Silk city” by all Indians. The city is about 169 kilometers (105 mi) south of Bhubaneswar, the state capital. It is one of the oldest and largest cities of Odisha and also famous for its Silk saris, temples and its unique culture. It is the fourth most populous urban city in Odisha and 122nd in India.

Overview:
                Berhampur city covers around 8070 Square km area. It is the primary railway head for nearby tourist destination. It is a center for the nearby towns, villages. Most of the people of Berhampur are engaged with different Businesses. Its intricately designed silk saris known as Brahmapuri patta, handlooms. Another type of patta called as Bomokei patta which is named according to the village Bomokei near Berhampur is also famous.

Demographics:
                According to 2011 census of India the population of Berhampur is 355823,of which 185584 are males and170239 are females. The effective literacy rate is 90.04% which is higher than the national average of 74.04%. Berhampur is 15 kms from Gopalpur sea beach.

Administration:
                The Berhampur city is administered by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC). K Madhavi is the present mayor of BMC. This organization earlier was a municipality from 1867 until 29 Dec 2008. The Revenue Division of Commission (RDC) of South zone and the Regional Office of Department of Postsout of 3 Regions of Odisha are located at Berhampur which covers undivided Ganjam, undivided Koraput, Kandhamal, Kalahandi districts.
